In today’s world, people can be ambitious for many things, but as Christian women, how can we cultivate a genuine ambition which lasts? We had the joy of studying this topic together at Friday Night Study, where our sister Rachel L. taught a lesson titled “Built to Last: Christ as the Foundation.” She encouraged us that we can have a steadfast ambition when it is built on God rather than worldly comfort. Instead of pursuing lives centered on ease and self-fulfillment, we are called to be ambitious for the Lord regardless of circumstance. Rachel pointed to the rich young ruler in Matthew 19:16–22 as an example of someone unwilling to surrender worldly comfort, showing how sad it is when someone does not realize how much God can use them when they are willing to sacrifice. In contrast, she pointed to Paul in Philippians 1:19–21, who focused on making the most of his circumstances to exalt Christ even while under house arrest because he understood that God wanted to use him through his excellence and faithfulness.
Genuine ambition is not about doing tasks mindlessly, appearing spiritually mature, or relying on our own abilities, but about doing things well for the Lord with the right heart. When our ambition is centered on exalting God rather than ourselves, it leads to genuine joy, fulfillment, and lasting fruit. Let us continue striving to give God our best efforts, knowing that when we do, we will live meaningful lives that matter for eternity!
