In the first lesson on the theme of "Unwavering Devotion," Charissa taught us the foundational truth of how to be devoted to God. She defined devotion as love, loyalty, and enthusiasm for a person, activity or cause, and the act of being devoted as giving all your time and resources for that person, activity, or cause. To be unwavering is to be steady, resolute, and constant in a steady way.
Charissa gave us three ways to be devoted to God: commitment to love God, commitment to obey God and pursue holiness, and commitment to deny yourself and follow Christ. A commitment to love God is shown through constant worship and praise to Him with your whole being. One of the characteristics of a woman who is wholly committed to loving God is that she spends time in His Word and meditates on it throughout the day. Practically, we can recite Psalm 118:24 each morning to remind ourselves of God’s great gift of salvation (Luke 14:25-26) and keep our focus on Him in all we do. Secondly, a commitment to obey God and pursue holiness is to not only hate sin but to also have a lifestyle that flees from sin. We should not blame others or justify our sins. Instead, we should confess, repent, and ask for forgiveness because we love the righteousness of God so much. Lastly, we can be committed to denying ourselves and following Christ. We are called to live for God, which requires sacrificing our own comfort (Luke 9:57-62). Being truly committed to all these things is how we can live lives of unwavering devotion to God Himself!
After Charissa taught, we shared in discussion groups about how we were challenged by the lesson and how we wanted to apply it to our lives. We then ended the night by sharing together with all the women what we talked about in our discussion groups.
Praise God for a wonderful time in which the women were able to hear the Word of God, be challenged in our devotion to Him, and make goals to grow in prioritizing Him together. Hope to see you at the next Cornerstone event!
